Transition
Transition in education refers to moving into, between or out of educational settings. It can also include the smaller transitions that happen every day, such as arriving at school, moving between classrooms, joining different activities, transitioning between play and learning, and moving from one routine to another.
We recognise that transitions can be a significant time of change for children and their families. Whether a child is starting school, moving to a new class, preparing for their next stage of education or managing daily changes in routine, we understand the importance of making these experiences as positive and supportive as possible.
At Bursledon Federation, transitions are carefully planned to help all children feel safe, confident and prepared for change. We provide opportunities for children to build familiarity with new environments, routines and adults through visits, social stories, transition activities and visual supports. For children who need additional support, we carefully plan both daily and longer-term transitions to reduce anxiety and promote successful participation in school life.
Our approach aims to ensure that every child feels supported to navigate change and is ready to thrive in their learning environment.
Below you will find social stories, meet-the-teacher information, photographs and resources designed to support children and families during times of transition. We have also included links to additional guidance and support to help parents and carers prepare their child for new experiences, changes in routine and key educational transitions.
We look forward to working in partnership with families to ensure every transition—big or small—is a successful one.

Year 1 ready:
One of the key aims of our Reception curriculum is to ensure that children are happy, confident and ready for the exciting move into Year 1. Throughout the year, we work with children to develop the skills, knowledge and independence that will help them to thrive as they continue their learning journey.
Every child develops at their own pace, but there are some key skills that support a smooth and successful transition to Year 1. We work closely with families to nurture these skills both at school and at home.
