PE

How do we teach PE in the Bursledon Federation?

Learning in Physical Education is underpinned by our Learning Values, the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum/Early Years Foundation Stage and delivered through our school values. From our curriculum, pupils will become physically educated though experiencing a range of activity areas that:

  • build confidence to take part in physical activity
  • develop competence in a range of physical skills
  • create resilient learners who are confident and equipped to take on different challenges
  • encourage creativity thinking and open-mindedness
  • develop collaboration and partnerships and encourage children to make positive contributions
  • promotes a healthy lifestyle where children love being active

 Implementation

  • Children participate in high-quality P.E lessons twice a week, covering at least two different sports/skills per term.
  • Teachers use, and adapt, whole school planning and resources to ensure lessons across years show progression.
  • Classes follow the PE long term planning to ensure pupils participate in a broad and balanced curriculum.
  • Children participate in a variety of competitive sports as part of the School Games Network in Eastleigh and South Winchester and attend sports festivals for Key Stage 2. We host inter-school fixtures and have attended local schools to take part in smaller inter-school events.
  • Children are taught by teachers (and LSA support) with a range of expertise who have been trained by Hampshire lead teaching specialists. CPD is continuing throughout the year. P.E lead regularly monitors support teachers, HLTAs and TAs to ensure up to date knowledge and skills.
  • Children in year 4 participate in 6 week blocks of swimming sessions.
  • We provide children the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity. We track children who attend these sessions and identify target children who may benefit from these. Our staff remove barriers to taking part in these events, offering encouragement and full equipment (including appropriate kit if required).
  • Annually, the school celebrates ‘Sports Day’ to educate and promote a healthy lifestyle and physical activity. Children engage in a wide range of inclusive, competitive activities and sports. A very strong emphasis is placed on Sportsmanship, Teamwork and Sporting attitude as well as sporting ability.

What does a Bursledon PE expert look like?

A Bursledon health and fitness enthusiast is someone with a lifelong passion for all aspects of physical activity, who recognises the importance of the impact that sport and exercise have on their health and well-being. These individuals show love and encourage each other whilst aspiring to be the best that they can be. They work as part of a team and build positive relationships with each other.
