Music
How do we teach Music in the Bursledon Federation?
Our music curriculum at Bursledon aims to engage all pupils with a high quality music education which inspires children to develop a life-long love, appreciation and respect for a wide range of music, increasing their creativity and providing opportunities for self-expression and a passion to aspire to be successful musicians.
At Bursledon, we offer a range of enriching educational visits including theatre visits for all year groups, every year, to enable our children to experience and develop an appreciation for live performances. We ensure the children have multiple opportunities to perform within our own schools and within the local community (our local church (St Leonards) at Christmas, Easter and Harvest Festival, Residential care homes, nativities and productions). Across the Federation, every year children have the opportunity to perform in Christmas or end of year production.
Our children will develop musical skills by exploring a range of musical instruments and have the opportunity to be taught by professional musicians delivered by Showcase Music School, this year the children are learning to play the ukulele. Students are offered opportunities to share their success and achievements to live audiences, increasing their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. Children are taught to understand how to explore how music is created, produced and communicated including through the interrelated dimensions; pitch, duration, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations. As pupils progress, they develop a critical engagement with music allowing them to compose and to listen effectively.
In order to maintain high quality music teaching and learning, we implement a progressive curriculum throughout the whole school focussing on skills and knowledge stated in the national curriculum. We have developed our own music curriculum which ensures children are exposed to all of the musical elements throughout their journey at Bursledon Federation. Most of our musical units are embedded within the curriculum and link in with the topics that are being covered across the foundation subjects. In addition to music lessons, the children learn to sing and use their voices, taught as a weekly whole school singing assembly/worship in collaboration with our local church.
The impact of our Music curriculum at Bursledon will equip our students with the skills and confidence to be able to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions including the works of great composers and musicians.
