History
How do we teach History in the Bursledon Federation?
Our History curriculum, at Bursledon Federation, aims to inspire and encourage our children’s love of learning through a range of educational experiences.
We aim to arouse their interest and curiosity of the past, by introducing them to a variety of opportunities to study sources, extract and process information and think critically to draw conclusions. This will help them to understand and contribute to the world in which they live. Across each Key Stage, where possible, children are given the opportunity to learn from relevant visits to museums, historical sites or have experienced visitors visit the school, to encourage a range of historical perspectives. We hope to encourage our children’s curiosity through using areas of historical interest that surround our community and that are in close proximity, including: Bursledon Windmill, Bursledon Brickworks, River Hamble and the boatyards that surround it. These enriching educational visits, in addition to engaging classroom activities, enable our children to develop a deeper understanding of how history impacts their every day lives.
We believe that History makes a valuable and distinctive contribution to our pupils’ education. Our History Curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is organised through half-termly topics. It is this topic-based approach which makes links through other areas of the curriculum areas.
Our children will develop historical skills: through chronological understanding, using a range and depth of historical knowledge, interpretations of history, historical enquiry and organisation and communication. We seek to inspire in children, a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people both past and present, which will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
Our desire is to have our children leave at the end of KS2, feeling as though they have thoroughly enjoyed history lessons, inspiring and encouraging them to take on new life experiences and adventures both now and in the future.
