How do we teach Computing in the Bursledon Federation?

Our computing curriculum at Bursledon Federation aims to engage and inspire our children to become curious and creative users of technology within an ever changing, technologically driven world. We want our children to use technology safely whilst having an awareness of how to stay safe online. We aim to develop the children's understanding of computer science by providing them with opportunities to design, create, write and debug computer programs.

Computing at Bursledon has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology. We don't just want children to be able to use a computer, but aim for children to understand the key principles of computing, how digital systems work and how to apply this knowledge through programming. At Bursledon we therefore equip children with the skills and understanding to create a range of purposeful content. For example, vector images for company logos, a useable pencil holder, website creation and stop frame animations.

At Bursledon, the safe and respectful use of all technology is at the centre of our learning. We believe that children, parents and adults within our school community should be aware of how to stay safe online at school and at home. We aim to teach our children how to recognise acceptable and unacceptable behaviour, whilst being confident in how to report the concerns they have.

The impact of the Computing curriculum at Bursledon will equip our students with the confidence, skills and knowledge to prepare them as an active member of an increasingly digital world.

At the end of KS2, we desire for our children to have a love of technology which demonstrates they are responsible, confident and creative users of technology.

What does a Bursledon Computing expert look like?

  • Curious and creative about the processes involved within modern computing technology.
  • Keen to explore how and why programs, software and hardware work as they evolve in the world around them.
  • Understanding of the key principles of computing and how digital systems work.
  • Able to confidently create a range of purposeful content both online and offline.
  • Able to express and share their love of technology within our Bursledon community.
  • Most importantly, someone who can confidently use technology in a safe and respectful manner. They can recognise acceptable and unacceptable behaviour, whilst being confident in how to report any concerns they have about themselves or others.

SEND Non-Negotiables

In the Bursledon Federation we believe all children should have access to our curriculum irrespective of need. Our teachers adapt provision to ensure all children can aim for appropriate objectives by removing certain barriers where needed, so everyone feels included and valued.
